I loved it an insane, scary lotgreydonNovember 11 2009, 14:44:27 UTC
Three things you should know about me, this comment, and my insane love for your story:
1) I had to sign up for LJ just to gush at you, because I didn't have an account. Seriously, I'm an LJ-virgin, so I have no idea how these comments usually go. I'm just going to type what I think and hope for the best.
2) I have never, ever read any fan-fic before. It was one of those things 'other' fans of my favorite shows did. I was always wary of what the stories would be like. But, people kept saying how good "Fallout" was on other blogs and I got curious.
3) I love Guy. He can literally do no wrong for me. I mean the man left a baby in the woods to die in the harsh elements of Sherwood and I was like, 'Meh. Whatever.' I will seriously never understand why Marian would chose Robin over Guy. So, this story is obviously how season two should have ended, for me. It's just made me so happy.
Anyhoo, all of those disclaimers are leading up me telling you that I LOVE this story. I really, really do. And, because I've obsessively read the entire thing, all night, I need to thank you and be annoyed with you because I've had no sleep. Also, because I've obsessively read the entire thing all night, I'm high on caffeine. So, I plan to tell you ALL of fabulously interesting thoughts on "Fallout."
Yep. I am that person.
What I like best about this story is that you don't change the characters. Guy's still villain-ish. Marian's still drawn to Robin. Robin's still a dim-bulb. I read it and I was like "Yes!" It's just like the show. Only BETTER. SOOO much better because it's written by someone who actually knows what they're talking about, instead of idiots who accidently stumbled upon great characters and then screwed it all up with their idiocy.
The characters motivations make sense, all of a sudden. Stupid plot devises like Marian leaving the Outlaw Camp to go back to the castle suddenly seem... logical. You've given her an actual character! I actually like Marian! If you'd been sitting next to me as I watched the show, you'd know that me liking Marian is a big, big deal. Obviously, I like her with Guy, but that's mainly because of GUY. Otherwise Marian's always been so preachy and moral. Thank you for this brief moment of happiness with her. Before this I always rolled my eyes at her Night Watchman plans. Now, I see them as her desperation to be free of the confines of her life. Instead of shouting at her not to do something stupid, I WANTED her to put on the dumb disguise and go find Guy. This is a revelation.
Also, Guy works for me in the show because he seems like a good guy who's lost his way. An idealist with nothing he really believes in, anymore. So, I really like that you captured that longing in him. But, still you kept him "Guy" enough to think how fun it would be to sleep with Marian right next to Robin's room and complain about Robin's men's chipper-ness. You don't make him super-hero Guy. He still has his strange loyalties and twisted plans. He's still him, only he's being reluctantly... good. He's helping the White Hats for all the wrong reasons and yet all the best ones, because he's always acting from love, even when he doesn't understand why. I just couldn't adore him more.
Also, the dialog really works for me. I swear I can hear the peevish whine to Robin's voice as he complains about Marian's loyalty to Guy. You do an excellent job of capturing the "sound" of the show. I can hear the characters saying these things, only they obviously wouldn't because the writers just aren't smart enough to come up with lines like, "He had forgotten that going to Jaffa with the outlaws would include the outlaws." LOL! Also, kudos for having Guy insist that they're still "outlaws," even though HE'S now the one planning to defy the law. It's just so... Guy.
Anyway, I think I've harassed you with my glee long enough. Please write the next chapter soon, as I am eagerly awaiting Robin's heartbreak when he learns Marian's pregnant. Bwahahaha! It's just evil-y wrong how much I want to see his little heart break as Guy gets the girl. **Rubs hands together in unhealthy delight**

So I can't believe it's taken me over two months to reply to this. I am all sorts of sorry about that, because it might make it seem like I'm not ridiculously, deleriously grateful for this comment (and that you de-lurked to give it!). I'm in the middle of rewriting an original piece of fiction right now and wanting to tear my hair out, and when I'm really discouraged, sometimes I come back and read these comments because they make me feel like I might not be entirely stupid when it comes to writing. SO THANK YOU.
Anyway, I'm just so happy that you like all the characterizations here! Even Marian! (Personally I've always liked how prickly and righteous she is, and always took it as another reason she should be with Guy, because honestly, who else is going to put up with that? Only a person with a long history of being at the wrong end of verbal abuse!. . . Um, yeah. Moving on.)
I will come back to this story as soon as real-life allows. And I hope you'll still be reading!
