Wow, has it been that long since my last post? Sheesh. Okay, obviously there's a lot of catching up to do. Ideally, this would be one of those long, thoughtful, exquisitely-written screeds that would sum up recent events and somehow tie them all into a series of insightful observations of the human condition or something. Instead, you get bullet points.
- First and foremost, I have a daughter.(!) Rebecca Lynn was born November 11 of last year. It was a roughish birth, with phragmites being rushed off for an emergency C-section, although apparently the great rush and bustle did not signify any real danger to child or mother-but she didn't know that...but anyway, that's all long in the past now. Bb ("Becca boo") is seven months on now, got her first tooth, eating some solid foods, and starting to babble. You can see more pictures and videos than are reasonable over on my Flickr page, if you're interested.
- I also have an iPad. Yay. I used a bit of birthday money frivolously (to the likely consternation of the giver, who I think was expecting me to fix the bathroom with it or something). It's still a relative novelty to me, and I haven't quite got it set up for maximum productivity yet, partly because...
- What I don't have, is a job. I was laid off recently, effective the first of July. I can't go into reasons for the layoff, by the terms of my separation documents; but on an unrelated note, have you noticed how lots of libraries are suffering from tight budgets, and how continuing professional education is often viewed as a non-essential expense? Yeah, weird, huh? Anyway, I'm now a gentleman of leisure, getting back into the swing of job hunting and navigating the intricacies of the state Department of Labor's unemployment claims system. There are jobs out there; the unknown factor is, how many other applicants are in the pool.
- In other news...well, hell, the rest of the news is basically too copious, and too trivial, to try to cram into a catch-up post even if I could remember it all. I've been present, if not particularly active, lately on Tw*tt*r (where my handle is @l*g*ph*g*) and F*c*b**k, mostly with mundane posts and replies to other people's posts. I'm thinking about trying to establish secondary social-media identities on at least one site, exclusively for professional stuff, but haven't taken that step yet.
Now is the time when my NPL cronies are gathering for the annual Con, and I dearly wish I were able to join you all. Please think of me, and I hope I'll see you all next year.
