Life is hard when you're one and a half

6:45 pm: Mommy finishes giving Aa his bath. We've started his evening routine earlier than usual, since he never really went down for his nap this afternoon and is acting pretty tired. Plus, Mommy has a girls' night out date she wants to get away for.
6:48 pm: Mommy tries to put Aa in a diaper. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! Aa screams, thrashes, yells. Daddy tries to put Aa in a diaper. This is acceptable. Diaper goes on.
6:55 pm: Mommy leaves the room, turning out the lights on the way out. Daddy holds Aa in the rocking chair. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! (Usual routine to date is, Mommy rocks Aa with a drink while Daddy reads a wholly age-inappropriate story-anything from Jane Austen to Aaron Elkins.) Aa clutches blanket and sippy cup but refuses to drink, cries at top of lungs.
7:05 pm: Daddy has not relented; continues to speak soothingly and gently but firmly resist all attempts to exit rocking chair. Aa puts arm over eyes to shut out sight of odious situation; forgets to cry.
7:08 pm: As garage door opens directly beneath Aa's room, Daddy puts Aa in crib. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! Aa screams, cries, but cannot manage to stand up. Daddy covers Aa with a blanket; sings lullaby. Aa is quiet, eyes closed, breathing hard by end of song.
7:14 pm: Daddy leaves room. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! Aa screams bloody murder.
7:15:30 pm: Aa is fast asleep.
