Mental tricks, or, That milestone looks familiar...

So today I'm 43 years old. This seems weird to me, because I realize I've been thinking of myself as 43 years old for some time now-six months at least. I'm not sure what happened to 42, but somehow it just didn't seem like my age. Weird.

I'm listening to the audiobook version of Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. The story plays out in flashback, and the main character alternates between being twenty-three years old and being ninety-or ninety-three. The older him can't remember his exact age, and always qualifies it as "ninety-or ninety-three." He reflects on how people keep such close track of their ages when they're young, even reckoning by halves and quarters; but once we get older, either our minds get less sharp or we stop paying attention. I guess I'm beginning to hit that stage-whether it's apathy or senile decrepitude remains to be seen though.
