The Dark Lord's Daughter by Patricia C. Wrede

A family group of a daughter (adopted), a son, and a widowed mother go to the state fair. And while they are there, they see people as characters from a TV show. Except one turns out to actually be a knight from another world, and all three of them are transported to another world.

Kayla, it seems, was found where a spell had sent her, and she's the daughter of the late Dark Lord and the rightful Dark Lady. Her mother Riki insists on going back as soon as possible, her brother Del thinks it's cool, and they discover more and more about the world. Including the Dark Traditions, curses, trenchers, double-entry bookkeeping, the way things from their world are transformed into the nearest equivalent, two dragons' skulls, and more.

It ends at a moment of definite change, though there is potential for more story.
