Nightland Racer by Fenton Wood

The opening of this work is perhaps a bit misleading.

It starts with an aging racecar driver, the best that was, being drawn out of his home to drive a car into a mysterious region of darkness and monsters, where, they think, there is a singularity. And then the bulk of it is in the region.

Which is indeed a mysterious region, full of magical horrors and myths and death and danger. Wonders and marvels if you do not mind the peril. They involve adaptation to low energy, spears, how knowledge was gained and lost, melting ice, changes to moon, billions of years, and more.
