After the Dragons by Cynthia Zhang was intriguing. Kai and Eli care for dragons abandoned in the streets of Beijing.
This short novel takes place in the current world, except dragons are pets like cats and dogs. I think it could have done with a glossary, as all the species names were in Chinese. I understood some and Googled the others.
The story also deals with climate change causing droughts and pollution causing lung diseases. Kai suffers from the latter.
There's major m/m. Eli is grey-ace and Afro-Chinese-American.
