L'éveil des sorcières by Cordélia

L'éveil des sorcières by Cordélia (Tant qu'il le faudra, which I talked about here) was very cool. Nora discovers that she has powers and starts learning magic with her music teacher, Mrs Wàn, along with two other kids from her middle school, Maelys and Rajan.

This is an MG novel in French, so a quick and easy read for me. For non-native speakers, this might be a good way to practise.

French is a very gendered language where the masculine takes precedence over the feminine. However, among the witch community from this book, it's the feminine that takes precedence. Plot-wise, there are also feminist themes.

Nora has 2 dads (one is French, the other is Mexican American) and is fat. Maelys is deaf and uses cued speech, which is not the same as sign language. I learnt something there!

This is the first tome of a trilogy. I'll definitely buy the sequels.
