My Year in Books 2013

Jan 01, 2014 10:04

As I have posted my monthly review lists I will not publish my full 2013 list though there is a link to it below.

This morning I did some analysis based on my Goodreads shelves for 2013. Mystery and crime novels once again dominated my reading with my tackling some long running series such as the Stephanie Plum and Phryne Fisher series as well as two police procedural series by Kate Ellis.

I listed 47 audiobooks in 2013, with 17 of those linked to books that I also read. Most of the balance served as my audiobooks-in-the-car. I usually choose quite light hearted novels for the car rather than anything that would prove too complex as attention to the road comes first. Thus, the mysteries of Stephanie Evanovich and Kerry Greenwood were my favourite audio choices.

This also was the year I read Proust, encouraged by a Goodreads group that collectively read the entire seven volumes of The Remembrance of Things Past for the 100th anniversary of the publication of Swann's Way. It proved a challenge yet a deeply rewarding experience.

Personal favourites this year were Emma Newman's Split Worlds trilogy: 'Between Two Thorns', 'Any Other Name' and 'All is Fair', Sarah Dunant's' 'Blood and Beauty', Joyce Carol Oates' 'The Accursed' and Jack Wolf's 'The Tale of Rawhead and Bloody Bones'.

'Ready Player One' by Ernest Cline was also a personal favourite and was also loved by everyone in the reading group it was selected by and voted our favourite of 2013.

Not too many duds though 'Beautiful Creatures' by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl was the only one I threw across the room and had a good old rant about. I also didn't like David Wong's 'John Dies at the End', its humour just didn't appeal.
