Right now, I'm reading 3 books and I've been itching to read another. Usually it comes down to the fact that I like multiple genres, so I end up reading one book from several different genres.
I used to read about three or so at once--I'd leave one at the dinner table, one in the living room, one in my bedroom--and it would drive my monogamous family members nuts. These days I tend to finish one before starting another, but that's because I'm at college and have fewer places to stash books, and when I'm reading I tend to devour large chunks or even whole novels in one sitting. When I'm at home and time is more leisurely, I break into multiple books again.
I am certainly polyamorous when it comes to reading.
I do usually have an audiobook in the car and often listen to series in that format.
In terms of general reading I usually have a few 'on the go' at any one time though usually of different genres. Sometimes a book will grab my attention - usually thrillers and then I'll put aside everything else for that alone for a day or so.
The way I see it I have no trouble watching telly shows in serial format so why not books a few chapters at a time. Some days I am in the mood for something literary and then another day want a historical novel or SF or fantasy.
