Monstress, Vol. 3: Haven by
Marjorie M. Liu My rating:
4 of 5 stars Monstress is really a good title for this graphic novel series. Maik is just that and she is a hard character to like. And I don’t actually like her but I do find her very compelling. Maik is angry, rightfully so, and she’s physically linked to an old god that doesn’t have her best interests in mind and most of the known world is out to kill her. What bothers me about her is how she treats those who are kind to her: the same way she treats everyone else, in other words badly. Her trust issues are overwhelming and I’m not sure why anyone is helping her at all. That makes their motives interesting to me.
The story is to the point of making it difficult to review without spoiling everything. The art remains lush and gorgeous. The details and emotions it contains is stunning. The story contains a lot of betrayals and new alliances. Maik’s team has unintentionally become the root of city that might have been friendly to them losing its protective shield. They must get it restored and to do that they have to go into an old temple with older protectors and another old goddess the thing inside Maik wishes to see.
Both the little fox girl and the cat have a lot more of independent roles this time out and both showed have long lasting repercussions. I’m looking forward to seeing how this shakes out.
