I now have four books completed! Woot! This book was so much more interesting that Frankenstein. I really enjoyed reading it and this kind of surprises me. Lolly Willowes was written in the early 1900s by Sylvia Townsend Warner, who was a contemporary of Virginia Woolfe and writes a lot like her. This type of writing is so not my style, but I think the plot is what interested me the most. Lolly Willowes is actually a spinster named Laura, but when she moves in with her brother and his family after her father dies, Henry's children give her the name of "Aunt Lolly". The name suggests a personality of child-like traits (lollipop) and one of laziness (lollygag). This name suits Laura perfectly, even though she despises it. When Laura turns 47, she decides to move away by herself, earning coldness from her surrounding family. They don't believe that Laura is capable of taking care of herself after 47 years of being taken care of. Despite this, Laura moves out on her own to Great Mop where she then discovers that she is a witch after making a Pact with the Devil. Laura isn't a normal witch though; she doesn't practice magic. She just uses the Devil's persuasion to get the peace she needs to live on her own and be a spinster. The ending was absolutely fantastic. Lolly Willowes is a great read!
