Okay, today started off well. After my two morning classes, I procrastinated nicely, then went for a beautiful walk in the cemetery. This was followed by a pleasant dinner at Papa's with
Freckles42 and
gelgoog; a fun time was had by all.
Freckles and I went to the Women's College Health Forum. I figured it'd be interesting, and it may count as a cultural event for my IDC requirement. So, one of the presentations was on the risk factors for cervical cancer. This is one of the most frightening things I've ever heard. Apparently women my age are at the highest risk of developing cervical cancer. Risk factors include: sexual activity (duh), multiple partners, a partner who has had multiple partners, HPV, and smoking. HPV, a leading cause of cervical cancer, is also the most common sexually transmitted disease.
Luckily, HPV and cervical cancer are treatable, if caught in time. A pap smear is the only reliable method for identifying them. However, even if you catch HPV and treat it, it will never really go away. It's a virus, once you have it, it stays; it also has no symptoms. . .particularly if it's a more serious strain, like the kind that may develop into cervical cancer.
So, now that I've been throughoughly terrified, and paranoia is setting in, I'm finally going to work on the Greek homework I've been avoiding all day.
