Darrell got me earrings for Valentine's Day, which made Rose decide that she needed to get her ears pierced.
We'd talked about it before that when she was old enough to start asking for ear piercing we'd probably let her, because then we'd know it was something she really wanted. I wasn't expecting it to be this soon though.
I told her it was going to hurt, and even found a couple of videos online of kids getting pierced for her to watch. I figured that would make her change her mind; it didn't. Darrell came home and she told him that now that the car was here we could go get her ears pierced.
In the car on our way to dinner she asked if we were going to the doctor to get her ears pierced. I told her that we didn't go to the doctor for that we went to the jewelry store. Her response was "Well that sounds mighty dangerous" Darrell and I both died laughing.
Anyway, after dinner she was still saying that she wanted her ears pierced, so we figured we'd go to the mall and let her look and see if she was still wanting to. At Claire's there was only one girl working, and she said that she wouldn't feel comfortable doing it with someone Rose's age until there was another person there, so that they could do both ears at once. It made sense to me, since I figured that would be the best way anyway. Rose started to get upset when we left the store without her pierced ears though, so I said we'd go to Piercing Pagoda and see what they thought.
We got there just as a baby girl Jamie's age was going to get her ears pierced. The woman working their warned us that the baby screaming might scare Rose, which we told her was kind of what we were expecting, but we wanted her to watch it being done. Rose watched, and when the baby left she said "Now it's my turn." She picked out a pair of earrings and then climbed right up into the chair. The woman was amazed that she was so excited about it. A couple of people walking in the mall stopped to see if she'd go through with it. I asked Rose if she wanted me to stand with her, and she said "No, Mama. I don't need you" :(
She wasn't thrilled when she had to get her hair clipped back, but she dealt with that, and getting the marks on her ears. Then, when the woman asked if she was ready, she put her hands over her ears and said "It might hurt." I figured that was probably going to be the end of it, and that we'd tried and she just wasn't ready yet, especially since she was getting tired. The woman piercing them just told her that Yes, it was going to hurt, but only for a little bit. Darrell told her that it would get her sparkly earrings, at which point she took her hands down and said okay.
After the first one she cried, until I suggested she look at it in the mirror. That stopped the tears immediately, and she turned her head and said "Now do the other one." Pretty much everyone watching was laughing at that point. Just before the second one she said "I might cry" and kind of fake cried, but that was it. Once it was done she just wanted to look in the mirror, and told us she was gorgeous. She looked in every mirror we passed. We were going to take pictures tonight, but she fell asleep on the way home, so I'll post some tomorrow.
I am still in shock that she not only went through with it, but that she did so well, and without us having to hold her or anything. She did better than I did the first time I got mine done, and I was 7. She now has pretty sparkling pink earrings that she is very proud of. It just kind of reinforced for me that the wait until she asks idea was the right one; she was obviously more ready than we expected. I know that I'm going to have to be the one to clean them and stuff, but I was prepared for that anyway. She's actually done better about touching them than I expected her to, so she might remember if I tell her we have to clean them in the morning and at night.
