Best books I read in 2012:
- The Song of Achilles - Madeline Miller (So beautifully written and well researched-go back and read the Illiad and you’ll see how close Miller sticks to the original narrative-the love story between Patroclus and Achilles is so raw and beautiful, I felt as if I was watching a movie, not reading a book. I could hardly put it down and I was filled with such feels.)
- The Fault in Our Stars - John Green (Green is a very gifted writer, i was quite convinced that the novel was written by a sixteen-year-old girl and not a man in his thirties trying to be a sixteen-year-old girl. All of the characters are real, full of flaws and life. You root for Hazel and Augustus, you root for everyone and it’s just beautiful)
- Warm Bodies - Isaac Marion (Very interesting and unique take on zombies. Fun, but honest. I love the world Marion created, the rules, and how some of that comes undone by the end.)
- You Are Free - Danzy Senna (A collection of short stories about women of mixed races, dealing with motherhood, relationships, and work. Very real and very true, that I think anyone could relate to, no matter what your ethnic background)
Worst books I read in 2012
- Lies Beneath - Anne Greenwood Brown (started off pretty good, but unraveled quickly and became predictable and boring)
- When She Woke - Hillary Jordan (again, good premise, but not well written and the dialogue at most points was too sappy. A lot of the time I felt I was reading a poorer version of The Handmaid’s Tale)
- Preparedness 101: A Zombie Pandemic Maggie Silver (a graphic novel produced by the CDC. While the tips are ‘useful’ it’s mostly common knowledge about what to do in a disaster scenario, always be prepared with water and canned foods in the house. Nothing that was really zombie specific)
