Since the year's about three quarters of the way through (personally I'd like to know where my summer's gone, but anyway), I wondered about the bookfails people are ending up with. So: poll.
I've never understood why anyone finds it squicky. Maybe I just read a lot of English novels in my formative years. Most of them had to do with upper-class society or nobles, and it seemed to me that they were always getting married to cousins to consolidate the wealth of two families.
Then again, I'm not emotionally close to any of my cousins, so maybe that has something to do with it. When I think "cousin," I don't think of someone who's a very close member of the immediate family; I think of someone I don't know very well that I just happen to be related to.
Now see, I've read a lot of English novels and read of cousins marrying and not finding it to be a big deal. But this book has the cousins growing up more siblings so it weirded me out slightly
Yes, I am the same. Both on the reading front--especially about nobility and how they would intermarry--and the fact that all of my cousins lived on the other side of the planet.
