Annoying characters and why we hate them (or don't)

I read so many reviews on here that talk about annoying characters (for multiple reasons), and I've just been wondering, have you ever read any books that made characters annoying on purpose? Did you like the book? Did the annoying character add or detract from the story? What made the annoying character good/bad for the story? It seems like annoying characters could actually be written in a way to add to a story rather then detract, and I know there have to be books out there that utilize these characters. Do you agree or disagree?
