Title: Prom Nights from Hell - Five Short Stories about Prom from
- Kim Harrison
- Meg Cabot
- Michele Jaffe
- Stephenie Meyer
- Lauren Myracle
Okay, I hated my prom. Absolutely hated it. I was alone and there was no spiked punch. So, when I found this book, I was excited to read a supernatural slant on one of the most over hyped night of a teens life. Well, a couple of the stories were decent. Sort of. I'll go through each story and tell you what levels of suck you have to deal with. Spoilers, obviously.
The first story is The Exterminator's Daughter by Meg Cabot. Now, I've never read any of her stuff, though I know of her and if this is what she writes, I'll pass thank you very much. In this story, the main character kills vampires. No her name isn't Buffy, its Mary. She's after Dracula's son, because her mother was taken and turned by him. Yay, every cliche I've ever heard in one short story. Anyway, Mary's idiot friend, Lila, falls for Drac's son and is convinced that he won't hurt her and he's in love and blah, blah blah. I'd like to believe this is a subtle dig at every vampire falls in love with human story ever written, but its been done before. Mary goes undercover at her prom to take vampire boy out and brings along a new love interest. I don't want to give away the ending, but its friggin cliche and friggin stupid.
The next story is the Corsage by Lauren Myracle and yes, a corsage is involved. Yeah, its one of those be careful what you wish stories, but the main character isn't interesting enough for me to care about. NEXT!
Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper by Kim Harrison is one of the two within this book I actually liked, so I won't go into it.
Kiss and Tell by Michele Jaffe is the other story I found myself enjoying, mainly because the main character is as sarcastic as I am.
Then we get to the last one, the bug Kahuna, Go to Hell, by Stephenie Meyer. Now, I really wanted to give this story a chance. I mean, just because I didn't like Twilight, doesn't mean that the woman can't write well, or something. Like I said, I was willing to give it the old college try and boy did I regret it. Its all about how at one prom a demon from Hell decides to cause some problems and ruin it to, I don't know, get higher up in the demon archy.
I will give Miss Meyer this, her take on the old mythos was kind of interesting. Its just too bad that the characters sucked the life out of said mythos. The main villain is a demoness and she is so stereotypical evil its pathetic. And the main hero is named Gabe Christensen. Guess what, he's half angel. *head desk*. Miss Meyer, stop naming your characters so obviously please.
The main demon chick is named Sheba. Rofl. Anyway, Gabe is overtaken with the desire to "save" Sheba, leading to a weird, sudo sexual thing where suddenly, when Sheba is around Gabe, she's loses all of her abilities and becomes a weak kitten who can't do anything. The only way she can free herself is to get Gabe to say Go to Hell. Well, nice to know Meyer can swear. God this piece could've been good, if the characters had an ounce of anything to them.
So thats Prom Nights from Hell. Two out of the five weren't bad. So pick it up. If you dare. Muwhahaa and all that shit.
