Wikipedia called the book "ambitious", I simply thought she was trying to do too much which can happen in a multi-layered novel such as this. I had to read it for a Women Studies class a few years ago and was excited because I love Alice Walker's fiction and essays. This book, however, felt like three different books all wrapped in one. I am also not prone to like flighty characters and the main character was exactly that. I only really like two of the subplots and those could have easily been stand alones. The ending, of course the ending, was kind of a big let down. I did enjoy seeing Celie and Shug again and even Fanny though I was slightly disappointed with her character.
Basically, it felt like a good story wrapped in a bunch of people I could give two craps about. At least it didn't completely bore me (*cough* Now Is the Time to Open your heart *snore*).
