Festivids is my absolute favorite fannish exchange that I do nothing to participate in. It is also conveniently small enough that I feel comfortable doing a recs post for some of my favorites!
Lovin' You, Bringing Up Baby
There were two Bringing Up Baby vids this year and they were both really delightful, but this one was my favorite for the use of jump cuts for HEIGHTENED SLAPSTICK.
Hot in Herre, Cabaret - 1974
"A Cabaret vid? To Nelly?" you might say. But what makes Cabaret is the way that the context sneaks up on you in the middle of the wacky decadent hijinks, and suddenly you're terrified. This vid works the same way.
Karaoke Soul, Capital Scandal
Of this year's whole excellent turnout, this is the vid that gave me THE MOST FEELINGS. Ahhh! Cha Song Joo! MY HEART HURTS . . . I mean, it's also just an amazingly done vid and I am in love with it, as I am in love with Capital Scandal. But AHHH!
A Butterfly Dreaming, The Fall
The Fall is one of those movies that I almost like watching vids for more than the actual movie (though the movie did make a huge impression on me) just because of the visuals, dang. And this makes a really excellent use of them, especially the supersaturated color.
Baby, I'm a Star, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
All this vid is is two and a half minutes of Carlton dancing and being amazing and that's ALL IT NEEDS TO BE. It is perfection.
Outside the Box, Maru the Cat
MARU STILL HASN'T FOUND WHAT HE'S LOOKING FOR. The poignant expression of the eternal search for meaning in the universe, or, alternately, four minutes of pure cat-related hilarity. YOU DECIDE.
Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, The Middleman
I watched this with my roommates, and afterwards, we all turned to each other and went "okay, so if we ever need to convince someone to watch The Middleman, this is what we show them, yes?"
Express Yourself, Newsies
I don't think I can express in words how fabulous this vid is except to say NEWSIES/DANCING OTP. You will not be able to convince me ever again that Kenny Ortega's choreography was not specifically designed to go with the music of Madonna. You just won't.
Fly, Parks and Recreation
So I may not have mentioned that I pretty much marathoned Parks and Rec over my break, but I did, and now I, as all other right-thinking people, am in love with Leslie Knope, and so is this vid. It's pretty excellent.
Da Scarlet Dipernel, The Scarlet Pimpernel
I've been watching this vid at least every other night since I first saw it just because it fills my heart with joy. Percy Blakeney would like you to know that this one goes out to ALL THE LADIES. (But my real favorite part is all of baby Ian McKellen as Chauvelin's sulky flounces.)
Electric Utena,
Found and
Just Dance, Comedie musicale La Fillette Revolutionnaire Utena, otherwise known as LIVE-ACTION UTENA THE MUSICAL
My heart is so full of joy that these exist! Not one, not two, but THREE vids for the takurazuka version of Utena. And two of them are LULZY AND BEAUTIFUL DANCING-FOCUSED VIDS, and one of them is actually a serious Utena/Anthy shipping vid set to live-action footage, and one of them is set to LADY GAGA. *___* This is like the most amazing thing to have ever happened.
Also, not a festivid, but I am totally pimping it out anyway:
It's Okay to Not Like Things, Mawaru Penguindrum, by
futuresoon When I tossed out a comment to
futuresoon the other week, I had no idea it would so soon come to SUCH BEAUTIFUL FRUITION. This vid is a minute and a half long bitchslap in Sanetoshi's face, and it's a wonderful, wonderful thing.
