I have been meaning to write up Durarara!! for ages, now that it's complete, and I keep stumbling over the fact that I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about it! I didn't love it the way I loved Baccano!, and it's kind of problematic in several ways, and, I mean, how many stalkers does one show need, seriously. But on the other hand it is also ( Read more... )

You know my thoughts on Durarara!! so probably I do not need to repeat them here, but hurrah for pimp posts! And thank you for pimping the vid as well! <3 Also thank you for not being completely down on Shinra, boy gets a bad rap.

You are welcome! It's a vid that continues to make me happy, so. :D ahaha well. As you know my feelings about Shinra are very conflicted, but I figure people should get a chance to make up their own minds!

IT'S NOT HIS FAULT HE'S CRAZY. Also I have rationalized that his creepier comments towards Celty were just teasing, since in the finale he seemed genuinely shocked at the idea that she might reciprocate. Possibly I put too much thought into this.

It is true that I blame his dad for 90%! There was no way poor baby Shinra was not going to turn out kind of warped. CONSIDERING. And Celty, while awesome, is probably not the best person to raise a child to function normally in society either . . .

I have been musing over a half-formed post on Durarara myself- I found it terrifically enjoyable, but not exactly unproblematic. The one thing that really, really struck me about it was that it's one of the first narratives I've come across that used the internet and modern telecommunications without making it feel at all awkward to me. In some ways I'd say it was a story about the internet and online cultures, which makes such a refreshing change from seeing 'that strange interweb thing' tacked on as a silly adjunct in one episode of [insert major TV series here].

Yeah, I think that's one of the things that really makes it stand out - ugh, I hate saying 'social media technology' this way because it sounds like a corporate buzzword, but in this case it's the best way to put it, I think, that social media technology really was amazingly integrated into the plot. (I was watching the series with a friend who studies the internet and social systems, and he just about died of joy during the part when Mikado summons the Dollars at the end of the first arc.)

And the rest of it I keep being torn on - there's so much that's awesome about it, but there's also a couple things that just make me flinch. The one thing I know for sure is that I want Celty and Anri to share a motorcycle for always, and also fight crime.
