Yeah, definitely the intricate world-building. 'Least that's where my train of thought came from.

Catherine Asaro's The Ruby Dice is giving me a good taste of some intricate worldbuilding and seems to be working well as a stand-alone entry in her Skolian Empire series. At least it's understandable to someone who just picked it up on a whim.
