Mike sighed and shook his head as he looked towards his table. It just showed you never should complain about what you had; there was always something worse around the corner.

Back at the office, Lara the woman who looked after finding the right tables for the Sea Marshals, had laughed at his complaints about always sitting with little old ladies, or women who wanted to get into his pants. She’d assured him that this time he would have to sit with neither.

She’d come through on her promise too. This time there was no interrogations about whether he was married, no endless photos of grandchildren, no having to be polite over crochets or avoiding straying hands. As he surveyed the table Mike’s lips tightened ominously, Lara was going to pay for what she’d done.

“Mr Rogo!” Mrs Hamilton, the harassed mother of four greeted him as she tried to feed her struggling youngest. “You’re just in time. Could you help Marty cut his meat up?”

“Sure,” Mike eyed Marty with trepidation. The hellion was worse than any terrorist he’d ever faced…

“I can see why you like him,” Guinny laughed over the phone. “He’s certainly gorgeous and growly. Just like you like them. You’d better watch out though.”

“Why?”

“I don’t think he was very happy sitting with us,” Lara’s cousin lowered her voice confidentially. “That last night he looked kinda mad. Of course that was the time Marty squirted tomato sauce all over Mike’s hands. Then Marty got into a fight with one of the other kids at the table and Mike had to separate them. Then…”

“Ooops!” Lara giggled and interrupted the catalogue of doom. She knew what Marty was like. “Well that’s what he gets…” She broke off as a figure loomed in the doorway. “I’ve got to go, you know who is here,” she whispered and hastily hung up on Guinny’s words of caution.

“You know who?” Mike quirked an eyebrow at her and frowned, “Would that be me you’re talking about?”

“Why would I be talking about you?” Lara countered.

“Maybe because you set me up with the dinner table from hell?”

Lara shrugged and looked demure. “Would I do that?”

“Yes,” Mike growled. “You would.”

“It served you right; talking about the little old ladies like that.”
“Hmmmm,” he considered her thoughtfully. “I think it’s only fair you repay me.”

“Repay you?” she didn’t like the look in his eyes.

“By coming to dinner with me,” he paused significantly, “and Marty - at McDonalds.”

Lara grinned at him mischievously. “He ratted me out did he?”

“I’m bigger and I bribed him.”

“I did too! How much was your bribe?”

“Let’s just say,” Mike smiled at her and turned her legs to water. “That I didn’t mind paying it one bit.”
