Dear River, Hows my girl? Hope shes still flying true? I didnt tell you what Simon was thinking cause I thought he shoulda. Hasnt he talked to you any bout it? Dont that beat all? You have changed sweetie and grown up too you could so look after yourself. Of course Simon worries bout you youre his sister and have had such bad times. He still sees you as the girl he took from that awful place maybe he always will. I think youre being sensible to wait till youre calm he might be more sensible then too. Remember he never meant to hurt either of us its just his way and hes hurting too. The rugs sound beautiful and mighty interesting too Id love to hear the stories. Imagine where theyve been and what they mighta seen youre so lucky to hear those things. Going to the picture house is real fun. When I was little Mama and I went when she had spare coin it was her treat. She loved the sad ones best and had a lovely time crying we always took lots of extra hankies. I bet the Captain had words bout that suit he dont like dressing up were his pants as tight as ever? Ellens vegetables are growing and weve been picking the peas. There were so many so Ellen sent some to Jayne I hope you liked them. Were picking carrots now and Lions so funny he eats the tops off them. I was worried hed be sick with all the leaves he tries to eat but the vet said its fine he might need the vitamins. It does look funny though Ive never seen a cat like him. River you said about the local boys and the dark corners but I was nervous bout that and then the strangest thing. Jayne asked me to partner him at the wedding and said hed try out the corners with me. He musta been thinking bout it some cause he said we could keep sexing if I liked when we got back to Serenity. I was so surprised he aint ever looked at me I thought but he says different and seems real straight about it. I told him wed try the corners and then see how things go Im a mite wary of things now. I dont want to hurt Simon that way itll look pretty sudden to him. But I dont want to hurt Jayne either and I want to try the corners out with him hes so swai and knows me good. The peas were delicious, much better than any I’ve ever had. The lion shot and butchered a member of the porcine family and I cooked it with the peas. Everyone said it was fine meal and very tasty, and I felt very accomplished.
My cooking is going well. Along with my other book purchases I bought some cookbooks and use them assiduously. I find that cooking is much like chemistry and I always enjoyed chemistry. So after tasting the sweets you and Ellen sent I was inspired to try my hand at Turkish Delight and was very successful! The Captain and Jayne in particular were taken with it and wished for more. I will use this desire for bargaining purposes Kaylee.
Nothing nefarious is intended, I assure you my friend. I just wish to make sure that these two will participate in the dancing lessons I am planning. Inara informs me that the Captain can dance adequately, but I feel he must do better on his wedding day. Zoe says she would like to learn the proper steps and we have decided for Jayne that he is going to learn. There will be much roaring when he is informed of this decision, hence the bribery. But perhaps he will be more amenable if I tell him that you would enjoy dancing with him?
That idea would sway him, I know; because despite what you think Kaylee, our big tough mercenary has looked at you and for some time too.

Though she dont say shes all worried bout Simon leaving the boat without her she knows he wont cope too well with life on the Rim. What do you think of this plan? Ellen took me out to see Grandfather Cobbs house its beautiful and big enough for all of us when were planetside. If I can be with my girl in the black most of the time this might be a good resting place. I do love it here all the folks have been kind to me and I know Id miss Ellen and Mattie. I do worry bout Ellen with Mattie so well and me being gone soon whats she gonna do? Rivers says youve got Shepherds on board is that kinda strange? Does it bring back memories of our Shepherd? I still miss him so you know with his laugh and comforting talk and the way he held my hand and all. Have you finished with the things on my list yet? Lion is funny with the cast he tried to sharpen his claws on it and the sound scared him now he tries to avoid that leg. I cover it up so he can sit on my lap without worrying. Now thats a thought Jayne how will you go with my Lion? Hes kinda spoilt and used to sleeping on my bed and all. Ill have to train him to behave in the engine room too though hes pretty good when Im working here. River says shes teaching you all to dance hows that going? Theres a lady here knows all the proper dances I used some of my money and Ellen me and Mattie are having lessons. Matties doing fine and Ellens well like always. I fixed a tractor for one of the local folks and he paid me in fish. There was too much to eat all at once so me and Ellen have been busy drying it. Are you, Mattie and Lion really alright? I worry when things happen to those I care about. The fire sounds terrifying, no wonder Lion was scared.
Things have not gone well here either. We were to do a salvage job, but as often happens with the Captains’ plans, things went awry. Unfortunately the boat wasn’t a derelict at all, and unlike that long ago settlers ship, was still inhabited by the living. They didn’t take kindly to us docking unannounced and fired upon Serenity.
Their intentions were loud Kaylee and I diverted our girl just in time. No-one was hurt, but Serenity’s engines were overloaded for a time, and she is not as well as she could be. We are now docked at the Dresden Skyplex for repairs.
Jayne is playing bodyguard again while Serenity rests. While he is at work Zoe and I supervise the repairs. Don’t worry Kaylee we do not take the responsibility lightly. The mechanics do very well with Zoe’s gimlet eye upon them and when she is absent I project weirdness and they work faster.
After some initial argument, and much bribery, the dancing lessons have begun well. Of course the Captain and Jayne must be persuaded daily, but they are progressing. Although the Captain already knows some of the moves, it is Jayne who shines. Although I would never tell him this, he is very graceful Kaylee; you will enjoy dancing with him. And I will love dancing with Mattie! I am impressed that he is taking lessons for me.
Fifi had to be discouraged from dancing; she is not at all good at the steps and got under everyone’s feet. In appeasement I dance with her when all are asleep. The lion saw us one night on his nocturnal prowl, but just shook his head and wondered audibly what Mattie sees in me.
My friend there is no need to feel guilty. Jayne hid his feelings well. I’m a Reader remember and Ellen is his mother. No-one else, except for possibly Inara, realised his interest in you.
The silk was beautiful my friend and all colours of the rainbow. Fortunately it could be easily hidden, since the Shepherds had very strict ideas. They were not at all like our Shepherd who didn’t mind his flock of one’s eccentricities. I stayed out of their way and am happy they’re gone.
I think Ellen’s idea has merit and so does Inara. She has some refinements to suggest, but we need to do some research before mentioning anything to either Simon or the Captain. I’m so glad Ellen thought of this, I was worried about my dear boob as I’m sure you know Kaylee. He wouldn’t do well by himself on a Core world, let alone out on the Rim.
Jayne’s job is drawing to a conclusion and we leave soon to begin our last engagement before delivery the cargo to Hawkins Moon. It won’t be long now Kaylee and you’ll see us all again. I know you’ll be glad to have the cast removed and be back on Serenity. She misses you as do we all.

Dear Jayne, Dancing aint uncomfortable and I cant wait for us to dance together. Of course well be doing other dancing too if you know what I mean and I really cant wait for that. The best thing will be that Ill be dancing without this cast! Practising with it gets downright wearisome sometimes I can tell you. Simon writes that my healings on schedule so he can take it off almost as soon as you get here. Thats all that he writes about silly whatever happens me and him are over you know dont go borrowing trouble. He also says I might still be limping for awhile and get tired a bit. Looks like Im gonna still be ordering you around more than doing things myself. I know Ellens already told you bout the fire at the store. It was real scary Jayne and I was coughing some after but now Im fine. Mattie was so upset and Mr Thames too but the folks around have rallied and are helping build a new store. I went scavenging over at Booral and got some great parts for a new freezer system for them and am keeping occupied putting it together. Were already planning a grand opening and Ellen is to have the seat of honour. Dont tell her shell be so surprised. I sent some fish to River I got them as payment for some mechanic work I did. Hope you like them. The mine manager came and asked stuff about Simon so it looks like maybe this plan will go ahead. Youd really go where I went even if it werent here or on Serenity?
