The other day on Twitter (everything starts on Twitter, lol), I asked if anyone had seen Fringe and if I should watch it because I'd found the DVDs for cheap. I bought the first two seasons and I'm picking up season three today, and someone told me that they thought that I would like Fringe. This started me thinking about the various genres I read/watch.
I will read any kind of book that I can find, be it mystery, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, historical fiction, or classics, but I'll keep coming back to reading sci-fi and fantasy. The other night I think I figured out the reason why. With romance there's a set formula for the novel that's expected, otherwise it wouldn't fall under the romance genre. Boy and girl meet, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl go through hardships, boy and girl live happily ever after. There's a similar plot outline which happens with mysteries and genres other than sci-fi and fantasy. Because of the formulaic plots, I tend to get bored of mysteries and romances. I, however, never get bored of finding new sci-fi and fantasy to read.
With sci-fi and fantasy, the boundaries are less defined. Anything can, and will, happen in a sci-fi or fantasy novel, as long as it's within the boundaries defined by the universe which the author has created. I believe there's little formula to writing sci-fi or fantasy, and that deeper issues can be commented on with a sci-fi novel which can't be commented on in other genres.
I watch a lot of sci-fi and fantasy, even though I don't watch a lot of TV in general. Except for Castle and Sherlock, everything which I have completely caught up with is sci-fi and fantasy. I watch Castle because Nathan Fillion stars, and I watch Sherlock because it's British.
Again, there's a formula for shows to follow with the exceptions being sci-fi and fantasy. I love how anything can happen in sci-fi and fantasy, which translates to the screen. Because of the sense of anything can, and will, happen, sci-fi and fantasy shows interest me more.
I'm looking forward to catching up with Fringe and the other shows I've started.
