Avengers Review

Full disclaimer: I went and saw this movie for Joss Whedon. I've never read a comic book except for the Archie comics (and Maus I and II are graphic novels, not comic books), and the only prequel I've seen is Iron Man when it was playing in the background during lunch break during high school. I also didn't see/read any of the previews/interviews, and therefore, I went in with a completely blank slate, with no idea what to expect.

I also love that Joss Whedon thanks the fans who were with him before the Avengers.

I liked (maybe loved?) this movie. It has almost all the trademark Joss Whedon-y things: good dialogue, the creation of your own family/team/support group, and strong female characters (I loved Black Widow/Natasha). The only thing missing was the killing of a beloved character (like Wash in Serenity), unless killing Coulson was supposed to accomplish that, and I didn't know because of my lack of previous knowledge.

I went and saw this with my boyfriend because he missed the end credit scenes the first time. I had been forewarned by my Twitter peeps, some of whom had seen it two and three times already, to stay ALL the way to the end to catch the two bonus scenes. We wound up going to the later, 3D show because the show we were going to see, in regular definition, sold out as we were standing in line.

The audience was good; no one talked through the movie unless it was for making comments when everyone else in the audience was laughing or commenting, although we missed some lines cuz there was laughter over them. It's a good reason to go see it again, right? ;)

I liked how they introduced all the characters individually, except for Nick Fury and Hawkeye right at the beginning. I didn't feel like we really got to know Hawkeye's story before he left, but the individual introductions made it a lot less confusing than if everyone thrown together right away and you were left to sort out who was who on the fly.

My favourite characters were Black Widow and the Hulk. I loved Bruce Banner both as himself and as the Hulk, who is adorable in an "I'm going to smash everything to bits" kind of way. I loved that Natasha was the one who figured out what to do to solve the problem, and took action, so they just weren't plugging holes.

I think Black Widow/Hawkeye friendship and Hulk/Black Widow friendship are my ships, although I don't want to write either for fear of screwing up the characters. I shall be content with finding and reading the fic. :)

All in all, I thought it was very well done, and wouldn't mind seeing it again, although not in 3D.
