post it notes

Just watch out for my crazy girl stream of consciousness. I thought of each of these things at work today, but the old memory is not as good as she used to be. So I wrote them on post it notes and shoved them in my pockets, and then came home to empty out my pockets and find all these odd little gems that lead me in all sorts of directions.

My new profile picture is garlic. I love it. I put garlic in almost everything I cook. When I saw this plant I was enraptured. I'm not sure what I thought growing garlic looked like, but it is fucking awesomely beautiful and smells like grandma's kitchen.

Tropical Storm Ophelia is hanging out just east of me. The county above us cancelled school. But they are making the teachers report. That's whack.

Hearing the name of Ophelia reminds me of the book Reviving Ophelia by Mary Pipher. I read it long ago, but basically it is about how despite advances of feminism in the 20th century, young girls continue to be forced and expected to conform themselves to societal preferences, resulting in higher occurences of abuse, self mutilation, self hatred, etc. Mixed messages surround them in their social circles, schools, and families. I wish my mom had read the book before my teen years.

Ophelia was the subversive female role in Shakespeare's Hamlet. She went all crazy and a hey nonny nonny, and drowned herself. Different scholars have their arguments-- most prevalent is that she was pregnant and ashamed. I love me a subversive medieval woman.

I wrote a term paper about subversive women of medieval lit (love you Judith!) once, and the professor wrote, "you seem to identify with these roles." His name was Karl and he bartended in the summers. I went on a British Study Tour with him. He drank us all under the table.

Whatever happened to that boy named Kevin that was in all my English and Library classes? He was the only one who ever figured out my secrets to getting through cataloging class. I CANNOT remember his last name, or I'm sure me and my wicked research skills would be able to hunt him down. I wonder if he's as disillusioned as I am by the world of school libraries. . . .

Speaking of books (or not! but that's how I wrote it on the post it), a coworker lent me Jonathon Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. It was a case of "you're a librarian, you've got to read this book!" Cause, lord knows, I'm not exposed to enough literature. . . But I've heard good things and read plenty of reviews of his debut novel, Everything is Illuminated, so I'll give it a whirl.

Other post its: call to get hair colored, call Carol (this is useless, who is this Carol I was meaning to call!?!), the dewey decimal call number 508 (seasons!), and email Alexander.
