On another note, I found
THIS ESSAY
to be very interesting regarding Snape. I still hold to the camp that
says that Dumbledore's opinion of Snape is the important one. But I
definitely see this person's points and find the OotP evidence
particularly damning.
I do agree with your bottom line point on this. JKR has said repeatedly that Dumbledore speaks for her. And in spite of some red herrings I thing she threw out, I just don't see this falling any other way.
In RL, the timing for the OotP/MoM battle would be very damning in a court room setting. There would be no way for Snape to excuse that sort of evidence. But we're talking about a world in which September 1st and 2nd can both fall on a Monday (in the same year). So the author pretty much has the right to just magic away anything that doesn't fit her overall plan for the character.
More than that, though, I think your point about redemption is the cincher. There's an overall theme she's woven in here about grey characters. And although I'm not saying there's no room for us to wind up being surprised, I would say at this point that unless I'm missing the point she's trying to make with Snape, he's unlikely to turn out to be evil.
Still, I really enjoyed that essay. I stumbled on that community the other day and f-listed it because they seem to have some pretty intelligent discussions, whether or not one agrees with all the points made.
