Today at work, when I led the remaining kids up to the play area on the roof of the school, the bats were coming out, raggedly scattered over the pink sky. Nine little girls squealed with excitement for about ten minutes solid, earsplitting and shrill. Then complete silence descended as they played bat tip, the only sound the scuffle of shoes and an occasional quickly stifled giggle. They soared and glided, arms flapping slowly, imitating the wheeling animals above in the gathering darkness.
