You have a sixteen year old. S/he tells you that one of his/her friends recently loaned her (the friend's) 4WD to a mutual friend of theirs, whose parents you have known for years. The driver totalled it while off-roading. The driver is OK, and his parents don't know about the crash. The friend who owned the 4WD lied to her mother about loaning it to a friend, and said that it was stolen. You know that they filed an insurance claim about the 'theft'.
Part one: Do you contact the driver's family? The owner's family? Do you do something else?
Fast-forward a little while. Somehow (whether because you contacted someone, or in some other way), it was found out what really happened, and now the friend who owned the 4WD is very, very angry with your child - whether it's true or not, they think that your child was involved in word getting out. She comes to your house in the middle of the night and bangs on your child's bedroom window at ten minute intervals all night long, and drives a friend's car up and down the street in between times.
Part two: What do you do?
(Note: yes, this is happening to my sister; the window-bashing incident was last night.)
