Do you think that bullying should be treated as a crime in the legal system? If so, would you include verbal and emotional bullying or just physical? What age would you consider old enough to to face legal charges?
A lot of the behavior already is criminal or theoretically something you could sue for civil damages over. At times it seems like teachers and schools seem to do everything in their power to stop parents and victims seeking legal remedies.
I think at age 16 I'd be happy holding kids to a similar standard of legal responsibility to that adults must adhere to when it comes to not making the workplace hostile.
I'd like there to be an easy accessible system for bullied kids to be able to get something like an apprehended violence order against the school and the bully. Kids who fear violence should be able to obtain a documented right to the specific conditions they need in their situation, such as never being left alone with their bully without the presence of teaching staff, being provided supervised areas at recess and lunch times, the bully being restricted to which school exit and entrance he or she may use and which route home, a bathroom the bully is not permitted to access etc. This system should be within the education system, so the "judge" has access to all kids' files, and it should be outside the system of the individual school so that local issues like one kid's parent being on school board won't come into play.

so true. or their other favorite tactic--deny, deny, deny. just one of the many reasons i think schools need to be held legally accountable for this shit.

i like this idea a lot. i also think that, if necessary, assign a school aide to the bully to (for all intents and purposes) babysit/monitor them. escort them to every class, help the teacher keep an eye on them to ensure they don't harass anyone (their targeted victim or not), etc. obviously the bully won't like it, but too damn bad. if having your every move monitored teaches you not to be an ass, then so be it.
and instead of adding to someone's workload to do this, the school should hire x number of people to do this sort of job. should there be a time when there are no bullies needing monitoring (doubtful but possible), those people can then shift to work in the front office or be additional classroom aides.
