So I was talking to a doctor the other day who said that a large percentage of European women drink a glass of wine with dinner, nearly daily, whether pregnant or not. There are no signs of this causing any damage to the baby. So why do American doctors and women vehemently look down on this practice ( ... )

I believe that it's because studies haven't revealed exactly how much alcohol a woman can drink before her child has Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Some women barely drink (or say they barely drink) and end up with kids that have FAS and some drink a ton and end up with kids that are fine. There's no way to run a study on this (you can't experiment on preggos), so you have to do surveys. People may not be 100% honest on the surveys or there may be other contributing factors that complicate whether or not a child has FAS. So the safest way to know that you won't end up with a child with FAS is to abstain from alcohol at all. It's just like that whole, "The safest way to not get pregnant is to not have sex."

Is this a debate on whether or not we agree with it or an actual fact-finding question?

This is weird. I didn't even know I could post in this community.

I must have landed on this community when I was chosing where to post to. I've never posted here but I'm a member...though I never read or comment here. Maybe I should just delete and start over? lol..

It sounds very old fashioned and more like a guy stuff when done. I'm not familiar with many people doing it. I certainly wouldn't do it.

if someone doesn't understand what you mean, saying the same thing in exactly the same way isn't going to magically make them understand all of a sudden...

I think I am intoxicated after a glass or two of wine...

Personally, I choose not to, I'd rather be safe than sorry in a situation like this. As the first commenter said, it can affect different people different ways, and it's not a risk I'm willing to take.

I'd like to think I wouldn't look down on a very pregnant woman sipping from a glass of wine, but I know I would hope it was the *only* glass of wine and was being sipped over the course of an entire meal at the very least.

NGL, it makes me uncomfortable seeing an obviously pregnant woman drinking alcohol.
