just hold on, we're going home.
ever since yongguk could remember, himchan is always there.
from when he first stepped into the shadowdones, when his little legs carried him in light, airy steps as he stared at the large jeagers in amazement, himchan was there, running beside him.
from when he entered the training program for all jeager pilot, when he would lie on the ground panting and sweating and feeling his chest closed up, himchan was there, lying beside him.
from when he was assigned to a partner, when he first entered someone else's mind, swimming in their memories and finding their darkest secrets, himchan was there, breathing in his own head.
in everything yongguk could remember, himchan is always there.
---
romeo gipsy is himchan's baby. he named her himself, and he also took care of it himself. yongguk remembers all the times he would have to take himchan aside to calm him down when he found out that someone else had replaced a single screw, or a piece of metal, when himchan wasn't there to supervise it.
"she is my baby, only i can touch her." himchan always said, frowning and whining with his arms crossed. yongguk would give him the look, and himchan would throw his hands up into the air. "well you can too, but that's only because i gave you special permission."
that was never yongguk's point, but he always smiled at that.
---
junhong and jongup came in a pair. it's no surprise that they are drift compatible. yongguk found them curled up on the cold street,
jongup is only sixteen. junhong, fifteen.
---
the boys are now himchan's favorite.
sometimes yongguk thinks it's a bad idea to have ever introduce the them to himchan, because now himchan will never accompany him to the boring meetings or random checkups.
he's always babying them around and yongguk thinks himchan just has too much time. he always scolds himchan for being too soft and they can eat so many bowl of oatmeal stop feeding them damnit!
himchan doesn't even bat an eyelash at yongguk's words because he has seen yongguk secretly trying to stuff as much ham into his pocket as possible for junhong after that one time the boy's eyes lit up when he first saw meat.
---
after yongguk introduced daehyun to the supervisor, he goes back into his dorm and slumps on the bed. himchan pokes him with his foot, not moving from his spot.
"do you think we will win?" yongguk asks.
himchan didn't say anything back, but he shifts just a little so that yongguk can lie comfortably beside him with an arm around the waist.
it's a familiar position, something that makes yongguk fall asleep faster than he could count to three.
---
yongguk likes watching the kids bicker and play-fight. it feels like nothing has ever happened. it feels like it's just another ordinary day. it feels like the destroyed cities and crumbling buildings under scaly claws are just stories told by bedside. it feels like everything is going to be okay.
and when himchan tries to intervene but ends up as the main target for the kids, it feels like family.
---
breathing in himchan's mind has always been a little difficult for yongguk. himchan's head is always filled with memories and emotions and everything that yongguk wants to know about. sometimes it feels like he's drowning and other times it feels like he's running in a thick fog. it's always hard to find that little light at the end of the long run but when he finds it it's as if his vision is ten times clearer and he can breathe better and he can run faster and he can do everything just good enough for it to be perfect.
it doesn't always work that way though.
---
yongguk hates the water.
it's always muddy and unclear, with danger slithering in the darkest and deepest shadows. it's a place no man can ever venture, and it's a place every man should fear. it's a place where they might just all die in.
and yongguk is drowning in it. black water blurring his vision and poison rushing to meet his lungs, he thinks himchan must be crying seeing romeo gipsy in such pitiful scraps. he's just a little sad that's the last thing himchan would ever see.
---
he knew. he always knew. they were never going to live to see the end of this war.
yongguk thinks he has done too many bad things to go to heaven. but that's okay, because the angel beside him is going back home.
