Squeaky and I are officially Colonels! She still nurses two or three times most days, but last week we finally night-weaned -- fairly uneventfully. Over the past month or two she'd been waking up and then getting up even more when she nursed, so about a week ago, I explained to her that the boobies would be going to sleep when she went to sleep, and they need their rest JUST LIKE SHE DOES, and in the morning, when it's time to get up, they'd be ready for her. The first night, she woke up and I snuggled and comforted her and she drank water and went back to bed. Since then, of the past like eight nights, she has called me into her room only about two or three times, and that seems to just be that weird "first waking" period == about an hour or two after going to bed, she just seems to always want to wake up; maybe she's checking if this really is "nighttime sleep" or "nap sleep."
If she needs me at night -- either by calling my name or by getting *very* upset -- I go in, no prob, but if she's just waking up and getting resettled, I let her do that on her own. So far, so good. And every night we talk about how important sleep is, for her body, for her brain. And she's getting much better sleep now!
And then in the morning, we nurse for about half an hour. It's a great way to ease into the morning!
