Why are people homeless?

Im not the type of person that gives gifts on occasions such as christmas, birthdays or any other special occasions.
But as for this christmas I feel like buying gifts for people. I feel like giving. I feel like helping. I feel like buying gifts for those I do not even know; the ones who are in need. & I will.
Why do we give gifts? To show we care? Isnt the love we share with the people we love enough?
