Theme #25 - Mutual

It was mutual, Jin said.

Pi bit his lip and mumbled, OK, casting his eyes towards the floor. I’m sorry.

Don’t be crazy, Jin starts to frown, and then the last boarding call sounds out overhead. He bends over to pick up his bags, I have to go, Pi.

Have fun in America, Yamapi says, one hand reaching out to tug his baseball cap further down over his eyes. With his other, he makes their secret handshake. I’ll miss you, he whispers.

Jin completes the handshake with a grin on his face.

He’s been back for a while now, and he had noticed the things that have changed, and he’s beginning to notice those that haven’t.

Since his return, Yamapi’s been dropping by KAT-TUN’S dressing room more often than he remembered. Although mostly it was to look for Jin, Yamapi sometimes drops by to affectionately rub Koki’s head, make Nakamaru beat-box for him, and occasionally offering to rap for Ueda’s new song. While at it, Yamapi also laughs at all of Junno’s puns, a side of him which Jin finds increasingly frightening. You’re being too kind! Jin chides Yamapi, when he comes to support their concert tour.

Jin catches the nervous flick and blink of his eyes. He finds out about a month after that Kame only pretends to be oblivious. Suddenly there are only three people backstage, and Yamapi has just complimented them; said something rather and thoughtful and supportive. Yamashita-kun, Kame says seriously.

Yes? Yamapi startles, his posture suddenly straighter. Love or like, fight or flight, Jin thinks.

Nothing, Kame says, as the rest of KAT-TUN trails in through the door, Koki complaining loudly how his stomach hurts to the long-suffering Nakamaru. Ueda towels his hair, Junno greets Yamapi cheerily in a manner unbefitting that of someone who had just been kicked around again by his bandmates on public television. Jin eyes the way Yamapi’s jeans ride on his hips, so he walks up to him and jams his thumbs into Yamapi’s pockets, grinning smugly in a way often known to others as Bakanishi-has-an-idea. Let’s all go for dinner! He proclaims.

After dinner and a few drinks, everyone’s chatting, unwound, relaxed. Koki has had one too many glasses of wine, so he flings his arms around Kame’s neck and coos. I’ve got dibs, he says, sticking his tongue at everyone. Yamapi seems to look a little lost when Kame blushes sheepishly in response. Jin notices. I’m sending this dumbass home, Kame says, standing up, but Ueda yanks him back down, and tell shim not to bother.

Later on, Jin tells Yamapi to relax. I’m OK. He’s OK. We’re all alright. Jin’s knees bump Yamapi’s, and his words are almost lost in the babble. Jin grabs Yamapi’s hand, chasing circles around knuckles and soft grooves of flesh. Finally Yamapi’s perplexed face melts into a gentle smile; Jin’s words have sunk into realization.

So Jin whispers into Yamapi’s ear, Thank you.

Jin’s lips curve up as he watches Yamapi’s smile fill his whole face, as he watches the tealights flickering in best friend’s eyes. They both smile, with their hands linked and fingers twined, until Koki notices, leers at them so Kame has to smack him, and they laugh along with everybody else.

i love how this starts off, and also the subtlety of it. one of the best things i've read recently :)
