Our local CW station finally deigned to show Supernatural on Saturday night.
I liked it, mostly - which is saying something, since I expected to hate it or at most tolerate it. The meta wasn’t nearly as ham-handed as previous episodes. In a lot of ways, it was an admixture of themes from recent seasons (the meta-commentary, Chuck) with stuff from earlier seasons - the weird location with the cast of characters who wouldn’t believe they were in danger, the monster of the week (and the initial misidentification of same), Dean and Sam hunting for clues (albeit followed by their doppelgangers) and getting the crap beaten out of them by creepy little boys ghosts. I liked the couple posing as Dean and Sam and thought they had some great audience-identification lines, and found the couple-reveal at the end to be clever if a little obvious. Also, we saw a lot more of Becky in this and I thought the writing for her perfectly straddled the line between adorably fannish and creepily fannish, as was appropriate.
I fervently wish that they hadn’t followed Changing Channels with this - it’s too much cutesy meta and not enough plot explication all in a row. I wonder if they’d originally planned to air them in this order, or something caused them to change the order to this?
