“So is he your boyfriend yet?,” Chris asked.

Simultaneously, the three other people at the table spoke. “Yes,” Beth said.

“No,” Aldis said.

“Maybe,” Jared said, and then turned to glare at Aldis.

“What? He’s not, man, you’re just a booty call,” Aldis said, and shrugged his shoulders.

Beth reached over and slapped him on the back of the head. “Ow,” Aldis protested.

“Shut up. They’re working up to it, Mr. Negative. Weren’t you the one that said that they’d never get together, that Misha had to be straight?,” Beth said.

“Thanks, Beth,” Jared said.

“OK, fine, I was wrong about that,” Aldis said. "Misha isn’t straight, he’s just a man-ho who’ll sleep with anyone who wants to sleep with him.”

“Shut up,” Jared said, but internally he was worried about the same thing. The sex was spectacular, and they had a lot of fun together. But Misha didn’t act very boyfriendly when they weren’t alone, and at work he acted like nothing had changed, like Jared was still just his employee. Jared hadn’t said anything about it; after all, he’d memorized a relevant Cosmopolitan article. It’d been called “Don’t Scare Him Off!!!!” or something equally terrifying, and Jared had found it very helpful. So he hadn’t brought anything relationship-y up, but they had been dating - or whatever it was they’d been doing - for a few solid weeks now, and perhaps it was time to cautiously dip his toe into boyfriend territory.

Misha and Jared were sweaty and panting after a round of very satisfactory sex when Jared decided to broach a sensitive subject. “Um, I don’t know if you’d be interested, but some friends of my parents are having this party in a couple weeks, over toward my parents’ place in San Antonio. It’s on a Sunday, this afternoon barbecue with costumes or something. And there’s this really nice bed and breakfast nearby, if you wanted to make it a weekend or something. You’ve been saying you wanted to get away from work for a few days.” Jared held his breath as Misha looked at him for a long moment.

“Yeah, sure,” he finally said.

“Yeah? Really? I mean, that’s awesome. I’ll make a reservation,” Jared said, trying to suppress his grin.

“Make sure they’ve got a king-sized bed. I’m tired of your octopus limbs taking over the whole bed.”

“I don’t have octopus limbs,” Jared said indignantly.

“Yeah, you do, baby, but they’re handy for some things,” Misha said. “Bring your octopus limbs over here.”

Aldis banged his head on the table. “All right, I agree with you, J. Going away for a weekend together is totally a sign of true love. Now, can we talk about something other than Misha the sex god?”

Jared pouted.

“Oh no, don’t make those eyes at me,” Aldis protested.

“Why is Jared making the puppy dog eyes?,” Beth asked, as she slid into the booth.

“Because Aldis won’t recognize my and Misha’s epic love,” Jared said.

“Because Jared won’t shut up about the weekend away that Misha agreed to, and how that means the next step is them adopting Asian orphans together or something.”

“I can solve this conflict,” Beth said, in her kick-ass businesswoman voice. She pointed to Jared. “You love is all epic and shit, we all agree, but you’re depressing all us single people. Can we talk about something else for a bit?”

“That’s what I’m talkin’ ‘bout,” Aldis said.

“Like the guy in my office and whether he’s flirting with me at the coffee cart,” Beth continued.

Aldis thumped his head down on the sticky diner table. “That’s *not* what’ I’m talkin’ ‘bout.”
