I’m a long time traveling here below

So I’ve been listening to a lot of shape note/Sacred Harp tunes and bluegrass gospel recently, and thinking how many of them would make good SPN vids. There aren’t a lot of current pop songs that are all about death and hell and sin and temptation; you gotta go old school for that. I’ve always liked the hardcore lyrics - no happy angels for me, give me blood and “on slippery rocks I see them stand, and fiery billows roll below”. (This might also help explain my love of murder ballads.)

I mean, come on - this is practically an SPN plot arc already:
And am I born to die?
To lay this body down!
And must my trembling spirit fly
Into a world unknown?
A land of deepest shade,
Unpierced by human thought;
The dreary regions of the dead,
Where all things are forgot!
Soon as from earth I go,
What will become of me?
Eternal happiness or woe
Must then my portion be!
Waked by the trumpet sound,
I from my grave shall rise;
And see the Judge with glory crowned,
And see the flaming skies!

[By the kickass Charles Wesley, if you’re curious.]

Turns out I’m not the only one who thinks so; the new S5 preview is backed with a version of O Death. Apparently the song’s available for download from the CW site, but I couldn’t get it to work with my browser. I must say straight out that nobody can beat Ralph Stanley’s version. Sadly, I don’t seem to have a copy right now, or I’d prove my point.
