You've Got Mail wishes it was this awesome. I love epistolary writing, so maybe I'm biased. I loved the slightly dark humor of it, and how even the most minor characters really seemed to pop (Milo, for example).

I hadn't realized the movie was a remake. I adore movies made back in the Code era, so I will have to look it up.

Thank you very much. You've Got Mail is actually not my absolute favorite; I find it a bit insipid, so I'm glad that you found this to have a bit more of an edge.

The Shop Around the Corner is an interesting movie, and has a lot more to it than I expected. I'm not a movie expert, new or old, but it seems like these days the small, domestic movies - less settings, fewer characters, no explosions or aliens - tend to have very predictable, fairytale kind of plots. Older movies in that vein seem to be more morally ambiguous, which I tend to find more interesting. Plus there's this whole thing about SAtC being set in Budapest and filmed in 1940, right before the war, so there's a definite hint of subdued panic, economic concerns, and waiting for the other shoe to drop. (Hmm, sounds familiar.)

I'm not much of a Meg Ryan fan, so You've Got Mail never really did it for me. That, and it was sappy in a bad way. As for The Shop Around the Corner, I've totally added it to my Netflix queue. I'm really excited about seeing it now.

Tom Hanks weirdly creeps me out, actually. :) I hope you like the movie and that I haven't oversold it!

Hear, hear.
I find the movie fairly bland also, but this version isn't.
