Reading fic on the Kindle

Nov 20, 2011 19:02

I’ve finally got my Instapaper and the Instapaper to Kindle connection working. It’s really handy, especially for reading fic on the Kindle. Before I had to download the fic, upload it to an email attachment and email it to my Kindle address, and hope Amazon’s conversion process didn’t totally muck it up - which it did a not-insignificant percentage of the time, particularly with HTML files for some reason. Now I just have to click a bookmarklet in my browser and Instapaper converts everything and it automatically appears on my Kindle. Plus I can both read and tag on my phone as well. The the one trade-off is that it only uploads to the Kindle daily, rather than immediately, but considering all the headaches of the other method, that’s a tradeoff I’m happy to make.

The instapaper mobile app costs a little bit if you want it on your phone, but the account and the web access, as well as the Kindle connection, are free. The archiving seems pretty sophisticated, too - I am thinking it would make a great personal fic archiving tool.

Added: after I wrote the bulk of this post I learned about SENDtoDEVICE. It looks like it does essentially the same thing as Instapaper, but sends only to the Kindle. If you don’t care about having a phone or a web/cloud version as well, this could be a good choice.
