So I think I’ve decided something: the spaaace fic for ds_bigbang is going to be a gen/bromance thing rather than a strict F/K pairing. I was really struggling with the issues of how to get an android and a human together, and why robots, humanoid or otherwise, would even bother to have sex anyway. There are ways around it - either be trope-y and comedic and avoid it altogether, or spend a lot of time establishing the backstory and dealing with the miscommunications that would ensue - but neither really appeals to me. I fear that less people will be likely to read it - I admit that I will pick ship fics over gen when my reading time is limited, and I can’t be the only one. But a finished fic that a few people read is better than an unfinished fic that nobody gets to read, right?
I may also have been influenced by watching the first few eps of Crusoe from Netflix. I always meant to check out that show when it was broadcast, but it was canceled so fast I never got the chance. Holy cow, this is the bromance-y-est thing I’ve seen in years. And not in the UST way, although I’m sure some people see it that way, but in the manly “we are heterosexual life mates, best friends, and would die for each other” sort of way. It’s an interpretation that’s hard to pull off these days; you used to see it in, say, cop shows and war movies, but now it reads as sexual tension most of the time. Maybe the ‘historical’ setting makes it easier - and speaking of history, I’m rather impressed with how Crusoe used the aftermath of the English Civil War effectively in their plotting.
Anyway, that’s what I’m thinking right now: buddy movie in space. Fortunately, I’m so behind on writing I won’t have to delete much…..hahahaha…. *weeps*
