sorrow & joy

Fifteen minutes after I drove up the steep hill to work, another driver turned onto the same street and tried to power her Corvette up the hill also. It didn't work out as well for her. She had a passenger/prospective buyer in the car, whom she was test-driving the vehicle with, and lost control after punching the gas and accelerating to nearly 100 mph. (Our UPS driver was talking to crime scene investigators and got that number unofficially from them.) The driver died, and her passenger is in critical condition.

I think that all of us who work on this hill realized it was just a matter of time before someone had a horrible crash here. Cars zoom up and down the curving road, not paying attention to the dozen or so blind driveways they pass. Getting out of our parking lot is a nightmare because of this. I never go over the speed limit along this stretch of road, because I don't want to be responsible for killing some poor accountant who's simply trying to get home to her family.

This crash was surprising, though. Corvette. Trees. No other vehicles involved. And it was even on an odd flat stretch of road, a straightaway as well.

I made the mistake of reading the comments to the news article (at the link above). The ability to speak freely and to a wide audience brings some real creepers to the Internet. Have they no value for human life? Have they no respect for self or others? No dignity? I'm ashamed for their sakes.

Well, the title of this is "Sorrow & Joy."

The joyful thing is that on Monday, our friends Becka and Swany (one of the pastors who performed our wedding) got engaged! This is thrilling for me -- these are dear people and also the first engagement of 2010 amongst my friends. He asked her on Monday afternoon, and then lured us to another friend's home under the pretense of watching 24 together. When we walked in the door, the house was packed full of people wondering why in the world 24 had suddenly become so popular. And then Swany and Becka arrived, and we understood what was going on. That was a cool plan, to get us in one place so that they only had to make one big announcement.

Their's is a wedding that Gerry and I both want to witness and support. So, later in the year... Alabama, here we come!

work, bekah, disaster, wedding
