doris's mothers' day surprise

May 14, 2007 18:12

Darn cataplexy. My foot just flailed out and kicked over a bunch of stuff under my desk. Thankfully the flowers and cake and things we'd hidden there in the morning for Doris's party were no longer there.

Hmm, I could go two places from that opening paragraph.

1. Cataplexy. Related to narcolepsy. It's like when a person falls asleep for less than a second, but there is a dream, and the body responds to the dream. Usually it's triggered by strong emotion. It shows up in me usually by my arm throwing things randomly, or my knees buckling. An interesting medical condition for sure! Three bottles of green tea since the involuntary kick, I am still sleepy.

2. Doris's party. My coworker Doris, who went on the cruise with me in March, is a childless single lady. Yet she is more of a "mother" to the teenagers and young adults who work for her than some mothers are to their own families. Today, the "kids" decided to honor her by making it a great big Mothers' Day celebration!

We got her out of the office long enough to set up, and then when she returned, we solemnly handed her a small piece of paper that said, "Redeemable for one Special Day with the coolest kids in town!" Then we led her to the office which had these items:

- Pink feather boa
- Sparkly pink tiara
- Potted orchid (pink of course)
- Pink gift bag with certificates for a manicure and pedicure
- All sorts of pink candy
- Stack of redeemable certificates for things like hugs and kisses and songs
- Helium balloon bouquet with a rolled up message visible inside each balloon
- Homemade chocolate cake
- Voucher for free lunch today at the cafe
- Certificate proclaiming that we are taking her to dinner tonight
Doris was stunned. Absolutely stunned. No screaming, no tears, no laughter, just her jaw hanging open in amazement!

Throughout the day she's been redeeming the certificates, and I am especially enjoying when the "One free song request" ones are used. Err, except for when I received one! I sang for her something I'd learned at church yesterday:

Jesus, lover of my soul
All consuming fire is in your gaze
Jesus, I want you to know
I will follow you all of my days
For no one else in history is like you
And history itself belongs to you
Alpha and Omega, you have loved me
And I will share eternity with you

It's all about you, Jesus
And all this is for you, for your glory and your fame
It's not about me, as if you should do things my way
You alone are God and I surrender to your ways
I'm now waiting for everyone to finish working, and then we're taking Doris to Moe's -- "WelcomeToMoe's!" -- for a nice dinner. She is loving this day!
