So I was convinced to go the the Sunday Night Movie that they were showing in the Thornbrough Building with a few people who, not by coincidence, are my probable future house-mates. The movie was "Little Miss Sunshine," and instead of going into an extensive review starting from the very beginning and analyzing things scene-by-scene, I'll just give my overall impression. And my overall impression is that the movie struck me as being very sincere. A lot of "dysfunctional-family" movies tend to be too over-the-top and just don't feel quite real - perhaps the overuse of slapstick gags or ridiculous things happening to the family cat just are too outrageous to take seriously. But in "Little Miss Sunshine," the conflicts are not only believable, but are all-too-real, and the characters frighteningly familiar. The tension within the family keeps the movie grounded, even as the most random events occur. It's a very funny movie, but at the same time manages to keep in touch with reality.
