Camp Out is a documentary film centered on Bay Lake Camp in rural Minnesota, first overnight camp for gay Christian youth. The camp serves as a retreat for gay and lesbian teenagers who want to openly explore Christianity with their peers in a caring, accepting environment. The kids who attend this camp have refused to turn their back on God and instead are struggling to find a way to be true to both their spirituality and their sexual identity - to be the whole person God intended them to be. The group of teens bond with each other, as well as with a band of tolerant camp counselors and openly gay pastors. Pastor Jay says it best when he describes the camp’s philosophy: “You shouldn’t have to throw away religion or deny your sexuality or sexual identity, [as those things] are a piece of what we’re all meant to be.” This film tackles the question of why these kids yearn to be a part of the Christian faith.
