A weekly re-cap

Things are going pretty well here. I found out that because I abstained from voting it may hurt my residency chances. So two courses in the spring? More costly than I would like, but I don't have the final verdict yet, so we'll see.

The good news on the political front is that even people in Missoula are starting to hear about Barrack Obama and are getting excited about him possibly running for President within these next two elections. The one that happened yesterday was a crap-slinging mudfight. I didn't vote at all because I didn't know anything about the bills/issues, and I hat- "intensely disliked" both candidates. I could go and write a name in, but I really didn't want to vote one way or another on the other things and possibly pick the wrong choice. As Allison says, abstention is a statement as well. So my friend Tanha and I voted for Hugh Jackman instead and went and saw The Prestige.

Amazing movie! Intense, emotional, gripping, unpredictable (for the most part), sometimes brutal, but a wonderful story. I was shell-shocked afterwards. It was just...amazingly good...and a good movie to see on a dark rainy night.

I just have to say, though, there is a reason Hugh Jackman is my king in man-chess, and always will be. My one rule is, he must never ever wear a shirt.

Well, there are certain exceptions if the shirt is a short sleeved one, or something like that.

No more snow for now. It's not quite cold enough. Just torrential rain for part of the night last night. My umbrella was turned inside out 3 times in ten minutes before I finally gave up and just used my hood. (It's a little big and I end up not being able to see very well from underneath it.) The worst part was the worms. Now, I love worms, don't get me wrong. I even stop and pick them up off of the sidewalk when it's dried and they're stranded. But when it's dark and there're pine needles and twigs everywhere, you can't tell what's wood and what's a worm. I felt so bad for possibly stepping on the worms I couldn't see.

Today it's sunnier. My foot is a little black because my shoe dye leaked after I stepped in a puddle (read: "ocean") I couldn't see, but other than that it's all good. (I swear, I saw a shark fin go past at one point.)

Then I went home and did laundry. My jeans (now a size 14! Yay me!) were soaked from the rain, and hadn't dried, even four hours after getting them wet. While sorting my things, a giant spider came out from underneath the dryer, and wasn't deterred by either my shriek of surprise or my backing away. I wasn't wearing any shoes or anything that would work for smashing, so Matt came to the rescue with some metal object. *phew* There are spiders here called "hobo" spiders that are both poisonous and slightly aggressive. (Some people say they just can't see well, but this guy knew where he was headed.)

This one might have been one, but it was hard to tell after it had been squished. Thank goodness for having someone around to do the dirty work.

I'm closing today with a great quote from a columnist here.  It began with him ranting about the use of the word "deliver" in our recent political race, but this lovely aside caught my attention.

"I've never seen such abuse of the English language since 'access' became a verb. And also, your continual slaughter of the word 'safe,' as in 'Drive safe!' You don't 'drive safe,' people, unless you actually have a motorized, street-legal, square metal box meant for locking up valuables. You 'drive safely.' It's called a freakin' adverb. Look it up sometime."

If you'd like to read the rest of Jamie Kelly's column, which is a rare one I actually like for the most part, go here.
