[personality]

Despite his past being a complete mystery, one word sums up Eco nicely: flamboyant. On the surface Eco is bright and carefree. He makes friends easily and loves to socialize - with men and women alike. He doesn’t seem to have a care in the world and readily follows Belca loyally on the prince’s journey, saving him not once, but twice on different occasions. He doesn’t seem to care for material possessions or money. In fact, the only reason he gives Belca for his loyalty is that he wishes to sing the prince’s song and story of his life for years to come. The sense of adventure certainly isn’t lost on Eco and it seems that he’s not afraid of taking risks, even if they could easily cost him his life. One might say he seems to be almost oblivious to danger and everything around him.

Which of course in reality is far from the truth. Despite his ditzy attitude and nature, Eco is very intelligent and quick witted. He’s fully aware of the consequences around himself and those he’s involved with. Having traveled lots and studied many things, Eco has much knowledge about the world and friends in various places, even high places. His charm and smarts usually help him out of tight situations, such as when he was trapped in a cell and convinced the maid of the estate to poison the people in charge along with the master so he could set himself free.

There’s also a dark and serious side to the happy young man who saved Belca’s life. Rarely ever shown, this side of Eco speaks numbers about what kind of person he truly is. Eco had no qualms against choking the prince to prove a point. He would have killed Belca right after saving him if the prince hadn’t shown him his will to live.

If there’s one thing that Eco lives for it’s the truth and that’s something he certainly will not sugar coat - even around young children like Belca’s half- sister, princess Musca. He’s all about delivering truth, regardless of how painful and raw it might be. The people have a right to know, and this almost costs him his life. But for the truth? It’s worth it.
There’s no doubting Eco’s loyalty to the prince either. The affection he has for prince Belca is genuine and Eco’s willing to risk his life for him. His worry is real along with his concern, and it’s truly only Belca who seems to really bring out the serious side in Eco.

But, if there’s one thing that Eco cares more about than truth and perhaps Belca, it is music and dance. The wandering bard has a love for music that’s as clear as day. He also has a poetry book where he writes all his poems and songs in which is arguably his most precious possession. He’s an entertainer by nature and this side of him will certainly shine almost always.
Eco also has a complete disregard for social castes. Oh, he’s well aware of them - in fact, he himself is nobility, his true name Franscesco, a boy who once belonged to a noble household but instead ran away, leaving it behind forever. The reason why he did so is still unknown, but what is known is that that decision has left the young man quite pleased and happy with himself. He doesn’t care if Belca is a prince, nor would he care if Belca was a beggar - people are people and they’re all equal. Fancy clothes and riches don’t matter. It’s a person’s personality and song that deems them worthy of respect.

At least, in Eco’s eyes it does.

[orientation]

To make a clear distinction of Eco’s sexual orientation is a hard task, simply because it’s somewhat debatable. He is certainly not asexual - as a bard he’s used to writing romantic poetry and even singing erotic songs as he mentions to Belca, stating that they’re a usual favourite with people. No, Eco is certainly familiar with romance, love, lust and the like - after all, how can one sing about a topic they know nothing about? If anything, due to the way Eco flirts with both genders and over all conducts himself in a flamboyant way, it’s probably most appropriate to label him as being bisexual.

First off, Eco does not seem to have a problem flirting with women. After flattering her with words he offers valiantly to sing a love song personally to Ricolise, a female friend of his who helped hide Belca and Eco from the guards looking to capture Belca. According to Ricolise, Eco’s songs also seem to be popular with the ladies. In another instance, when Eco is restrained in a cell due to being betrayed by an old nobleman friend of his, the Earl of Arlon. The maid who works for the Earl of Arlon named Anette who knew Eco from before seems to have had a crush on Eco. He uses sweet words to get her to agree to help him escape by doing him a favour.

The second thing to take into account is Eco’s relationship with Belca and the way he conducts himself toward the prince. Eco is anything but formal toward Belca; instead, he has no qualms about getting right up close in the prince’s personal space. Eco regards Belca as cute, calls him cute, and has no problem teasing the prince on multiple occasions. He saves the prince, a complete stranger to him at first on two occasions and without a care in the world, swears himself to the prince’s side. He does not want money nor does he want another form of compensation - what Eco wants is Belca’s song. Eco is very attached to the prince, willing to risk his life which he does several times, which seems strange at the very least. However it’s obvious that Eco regards Belca quite affectionately; for the first thing he does when he is freed from the Earl of Arlon’s cell is search for Belca and once he finds him Eco proceeds to run screaming the prince’s name only to hug him hard and tight, throwing himself onto Belca in front of everyone’s eyes. Eco’s face is blushing and teary for a moment as he does so until he bounces back and proceeds to grin like he usually does. Eco also does not have a problem with cross dressing either. When hiding Belca from the guards with Ricolise’s help, both Belca and Eco dress up as women. When taking off their disguises, Eco calls Belca cute and teases him, while stating that Belca is cute but he himself makes the prettier woman. He also has no problem bringing up the matter with the guard who falls for ‘Mariebelle’ - the disguised female persona of Belca - of his mistake, finding it romantic that the guard, even after finding out Belca is a boy, swears to protect the prince with his life and help him reach his goal.

Of course, the way Eco acts toward cross dressing and toward Belca in general might not seem odd in manga, but in accordance to the setting of +C: Sword and Cornett it would certainly be deemed as strange. The time period of the series is somewhat similar to our own late Medieval to Renaissance period in history and thus, flamboyant gestures, cross dressing or anything deemed to be ‘unmanly’ was discriminated against or even punishable by law. Eco has no qualms about openly acting flamboyant in public or emotional, nor does he have a problem with cross dressing - going so far as to participate in it as well, even if technically he did not have to in that instance for he was not also wanted or known by the law. It is also canonly quoted from the Earl of Arlon that while Eco was at his estate studying, working as a stay in, Eco used to sneak out to go to the “red light district” and “join in drag contests.” Even more surprising is Eco’s reaction to the Earl knowing - he cares more about being perceived as not hard working, rather than being embarrassed about cross dressing.

His manner toward Belca is also out of place due to Belca being nobility and Eco a mere wandering bard. Yet Belca is treated by Eco as if the two are on the same level. Given the way Eco acts and the nature of his role in society as a bard, I can’t see Eco having too much of a problem when it comes to which gender he may or may not have to sleep or entertain. As an entertainer by nature, poet and romanticist, love, lust and desire are things that can be shared between everyone, regardless of gender, thus although he may be surprised to learn of the nature of his contract, in the end he probably won’t mind too much about the gender of the person he sleeps with - so long as they’re an inspiration for a new song for him to write and sing.

[appearance] N/A
[wish] To sing Belca’s song and stay by his side till the end.
[requested house] Youfuu Household
[misc notes] Despite being a bard, Eco his highly intelligent in many areas and knows how to fight, due to originally being of noble birth. He knows how to use a sword, but he prefers not to fight and use music and song and the power of rumours as his weapon.

[There’s the sound of fumbling before the image of a young blond comes into view. It appears he’s lying on his bed, blond hair splayed on the sheets, bright blue eyes blinking widely. He doesn’t seem too concerned about the predicament he's in. No, in fact he seems perfectly fine. Content even. His smile is bright and cheery and the red Yukata he's been dressed in seems to suit him well enough.]

Ohhh~!

[Awe is clearly present on his cheery, pretty face as he looks up at the device he’s holding up in front of it.]

Wow~! This is so neat! ♥ I didn’t know things like this existed.

[There’s a soft sound of consideration as Eco cocks his head to look at the device with a different angle, still all smiles.]

I have to say, this is all rather new and exciting, isn't it~? I've always been one for traveling and adventure, especially entertainment. ♥ As an entertainer by nature, it's not as terrible a set of terms as it could be~

Don't you think?
