San Jose Super-Con 2009 Recap
Words & photos: Bonnie Burton
Not all conventions are made equally. While San Diego Comic-Con International is still considered the Mother Ship of geektastic gatherings, some of the smaller conventions still hold a special place in my heart.
San Jose Super-Con (held May 16-17, 2009) is one of those tiny conventions that still believe comics, not movies, are king.
Here's a recap of what you might have seen/heard/witnessed/tweeted if you were there.
(501st greet a young recruit)
While Super-Con doesn't have big rooms screening upcoming movie trailers, or cater to big name celebs who fly in for an hour Q&A session then leave, Super-Con does attract celebs who like to actually hang out and chat with their fans. Some of the celebs who chatted with fans at Super-Con included Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), Marina Sirtis (Star Trek: Next Generation), Margot Kidder (Superman), and Bruce Dern (Silent Running), among others.

Jane Wiedlin was in attendance with Bongo Comic's Bill Morrison to promote their new sci-fi comic
Lady Robotika. Jane posed with
Star Trek and Star Wars fans alike. If there ever was a Super-Con pageant (and there should be), Jane would clearly be crowned the Super-Con Queen.
(Star Wars artist Adam Hughes)
This year at Super-Con comic industry legends like Howard Chaykin, Frank Cho, Jim Silke, and
Sergio Aragones were on hand to chat with fans as well as budding comic book artists and writers about their craft.

Star Wars and Indiana Jones artists
Adam Hughes,
Allison Sohn,
Cat Staggs and
Jason Palmer showed off their latest work, did commissioned art, signed prints and looked like they were having a blast bonding with other artists and fans. Personally, I think there were more
artists flexing at Super-Con than Comic-Con.
(Rebel Legion represents!)
Of course, no convention is complete with out a presence of
The 501st Legion and
Rebel Legion. Members dressed in trooper armor, Jedi costumes and more. Star Wars costumes dominated the con. Even Darth Vader got approval from none other than Wonder Woman!
