10 Abandoned Places

Jan 24, 2011 22:46

This is interesting. A version of this I saw elsewhere gave the reasons why they were abandoned, but I can't get it to play on my DSL internet. So here is the YouTube version.

Here's what happened:

Hashima Island, Japan - shut down coal mining town
Centralia, PA USA - uncontrolled mine fire since 1962
Beetilz-Heilstatten, Germany - former military hospital. Russian-occupied after WWII.
Oradour-Sur-Glane, France - over 600 people massacred in 1944. Left as a memorial.
Maunsell sea forts, UK - Built during WWII
Bodie, CA USA - gold mining town
Humberstone, Chile - Saltpeter mine (saltpeter can be made synthetically now.)
Kolmanskop Namibia - diamond mine
Craco,Italy - recurring earthquakes between 1959 and 1972 made it uninhabitable
Pripyat Chernobyl, Ukraine - largest nuclear disaster in history
